Introduction

My name is Syaana, it’s hard for most people to pronounce so just think of it as Iyanna, but with an S instead of I. When people get my name wrong after I tell them how to pronounce it correctly it Is one of my biggest pet peeves. I am from the south side of Chicago, born, raised, and proud of my hometown. I miss my hometown; however, I am enjoying my new experience in this new city and school. I am getting accustomed to waking up on my own and walking to class as an independent student without a voice of a parent guiding me. One of my intrinsic motivations are writing, I love to write, even when it’s for a research paper. I love putting my words on a paper or computer. Reading or researching as well, as I love to gain knowledge while having to complete and assignment on it. I enjoy literature, and learning about health-related topics like diseases, health surveys and just general topics relating to this subject. My main motivation however is to try my best no matter what, to make my family proud and myself as well. I decided to choose U of I because it basically fell into my hands. I didn’t want to go very far from home, an academically inclined school, and a good social/campus life. However, it hadn’t always been a no-brainer, on April 30th, the day before Decision Day I had been stressing all day, still not making my choice. Up until that month, I was considering trade school or staying extremely close to home at UIC or DePaul. The financial aid for U of I wasn’t bad, however it was still a large sum. After many tears and hard thoughts, I settled on U of I after reviewing everything I needed to know about this school. And a few days later, In received another scholarship that brought my tuition cost down greatly. I am forever grateful that I even had the opportunity to apply and get accepted into this college. I applied to Kinesiology but applied a little late, so I was put in Community health. I plan to switch to Kinesiology my sophomore year, and as of June, I am now a Kinesiology major! I chose Kinesiology because I am extremely interested in the study of the body and want to put that knowledge into becoming an occupational therapist or physical therapist. I hope to gain a higher understanding on how to gain leadership qualities, more knowledge about the Applied Health Sciences college, and how to network with other leaders, students and administrators. A few months ago, I would say my main value is achievement, and it is still a very important value to me, however in these coming weeks, its balance. In college it is extremely important to balance both social life and schoolwork. It is very easy to get distracted and have the want to get distracted by all the events and everything social on campus. This Is the most important value to me as of right now, and I will stand by it for a long time.

CAREER RESEARCH

After I graduate college and get my degree in kinesiology, I plan go to PT school to become a physical therapist. At the moment, I’m not sure what kind of physical therapist, however I am looking in to pediatric, private, physical or occupational therapist as my career options. If I change my mind as I get older, I might want to open my own facility and help other therapist have a space. My grandma has her own chiropractic practice office and that was one of the main things that inspired me. She has a doctorate and even at an older age still helps patients, friends and family when they need her corrections. I view her as an inspiration to my career choices. I used to volunteer at her office as a receptionist, assistant, and just an aid on her busy workdays. I would love working with her because it felt like an honor to be helping her. My ideal work environment is a mix between long easy days or short and busy. I want to be working off my own schedule that still fits in with patients and administration. A mix between laid back and strict. A place where I can choose to work on weekends or not would be ideal. If something where to happen and I choose not to go down this path, my second major choice would be early childhood education. I love being able to help the next generation of kids and to teach them is something I am extremely interested in. However, I were to choose this route I would probably have to stay a other year in college due to the drastic major change. With the degree in early childhood education, I can teach at a school or daycare and help the younger generation. I would move back to Chicago and teach at a school down there. I would probably move to a different state to teach, but in the beginning, I would want to start in a city I’m familiar with. Teachers in this day in age is extremely important and needed, because it is a vital part in every day living. My work style is a hand on, determined work style, so anything fast paced or ready to work is my style. This can fit with either teaching or physical therapist depending on the patient or student. In a facility, it would prove good because a fast paced environment in helping others recover might be well, however working in a classroom with many energized children have the same effect. I would start off as a teacher’s assistant, then work my way up to teach children and create my own lesson plan.

LEADERSHIP

As a freshman in college, I define leadership as the value or ability to guide and inspires others toward a common goal, while still creating a supportive and inclusive environment. Being a leader requires empathy, effective communication, and the ability to take responsibility for both failures and successes of their endeavors. Being a leader isn’t just about holding a position or authority, but being approachable, motivating, and listening I to others for change. Altogether, being a leader is about making a positive impact, whether it’s simply a group project, community initiate, or a student organization.  Community social level competency is a strength because strong communication skills can enhance community involvement and teamwork. This is important because communication and emotional intelligence are crucial for a leader to have. They must be a bel to engaging with groups that are diverse and can address issues more effectively when they take into a count everyone, and everything involved. In a future career, this competency can create better problem solving and enhance better team dynamics. This can lead to more successful projects. As a college student, this can help foster teamwork in group projects, build a lasting connection with peers, and create a supportive learning environment. And finally, as a community member, strong leadership skills can create a more effective with engaging in the community. A competency that I want to improve is personal/ self-level. because it is important to be self-aware and have good time management which is crucial for effective leadership. This can easily be a weakness because self-control and ineffective time management can be a large problem when being a leader. As a college student, strong self-awareness means balancing extracurriculars and social life. As a community member my personal level can impact the community and help their resources. I can learn to improve this weakness by setting clear, strong, goals for myself and follow them every day. This is extremely important because if I want to improve as a person than it should start by setting goals and reflecting.
